The West

Today, people know the Western history as the Wild West, and it’s an era people often romanticise over through movies, novels and comics. Therefore, the audience weren’t taught much about the western history because the media conveyed fictional stories of the Wild West. However, the title ‘Wild’ is true for the western’s lawlessness, untamed territories of the Mississippi River, the rowdy and unruly behaviour, and the famous gunslingers, outlaws and lawmen. But to burst the bubble of romanticism, the west was not so wild and more like the “Mild West”. For example, in modern america, there were over 4,000 bank robberies recorded than in the 1865-1895, since there were only 7-9 recorded. In addition to that, there were also gun control, since the citizens had enough of gun violence, but despite that, families had to carry their own pistols or rifles with them anywhere, even children! There may have been gunslinger duels but people at the time preferred rifles over pistols because they were more accurate and effective, since pistols were more close-range and small-bulleted. And the wagons circling around in the Native American territory was to not defend the west but keep the cattle from running away. But, in history terms, the west was diverse with race: there were American black, Native Americans, Chinese, and Mexican. However, during the period of the Wild West, the west were defending their land but also wanted more, so the Native Americans had to fight for their land since the american government pushed them out by killing them and mass killing their food. But also, we cannot forget their dedication of the Gold Rush.

Then the game Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 (Rockstar games, 2010-2018). A summary of the second game, it is set in a fictional recreation of the American Old West in 1899. The game focuses on the outlaw of Arthur Morgan and his position in the notorious Van der Linde gang. The game follows the gang’s decline as they are pursued by lawmen, fellow gangs and Pinkerton agents. And the first game is set during the decline of the American frontier in the year 1911 and follows John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a hired gun.

However, these games did the same as what the other media showed: fictional Wild West. However, even though the media and the Red Dead Redemption games portrayed similar happenings and history of the Wild West, for example, the game presented gangs, which happened in real history. Heists, but the game showed too many of them than reality. And the murdering of other people - but the game didn’t show gun control.

Overall, the research of the Wild West expanded my knowledge of history, however, it is unlikely I will apply the history to my game. But I will apply the research of old western clothing with fantasy features and fantastical enemy creatures, such as mutated cactus or snakes.

Since Lizzy gave me feedback about my research, she suggested I include a location of where my game can be influenced from. I highly agreed with the idea as it was interesting. So I quickly searched up the locations of the Old West and found that Arizona was part of the history - my favourite place! I decided to stick with Arizona, however, Arizona is a desert and does not have any luscious plants, grasslands or forests like what I planned for my game. Despite that, I realised that I can have my game take place in Arizona, but because it's a fantasy world, Arizona can be the opposite of what it is in reality - include forests and fertile land with plants. Either way, here are images of the Arizonian lands.
